What every first chess lesson should look like!

New students often come in worried about opening variations or upcoming events but the very first lesson should always cover move recording! Yes, that's right. Can the student record his own moves accurately and legibly?

Why is move recording important? There are two huge reasons. To illustrate, let's consider the case of my new student, a solid 1600 online player. He's heading into a weekend tournament where move recording is mandatory! So the better and faster he does it, the more time he will save on his game clock. Luckily his event has an increment so he should be fine.

The other reasons is that his coach (NCM Vas) will need to see the games for analysis. After analysis the games will turn into a lesson. Analyzing your own games is absolutely critical for improvement. And my student's target rating is 1900 which is doable with some training and my help.

So practice recording your own moves and share your games on this blog.
